The graphics cards will be using the next-generation 12+4 Pin Micro 3.0 power connectors. You may know that the previous micro connector from GeForce RTX™ 3090 is 12 Pin or Dual PCIe 8-Pin connectors (It depends on the manufacturer of the graphic cards).

One of the questions we have heard. What are the differences between the 12-Pin connector (Or Dual PCIe 8-Pin connectors) and the new 12+4 Pin connector? We like this question. 

One of the main differences between these connectors is the sense pins. Most of the graphic cards in the market have single or dual PCIe 8-Pin connectors, and they usually connect 3-circuits +12V Vcc signals and 5-grounding signals on each connector. However, some of the pins are used for sensor signals. 12-Pin connectors have the same situation. To provide more power to the graphic cards, the circuits have to be released to be power signals. This is the reason why we have 12+4 Pin connectors coming out, and we are looking forward to having them in the future.

The previous micro connector from GeForce RTX™ 3090 is 12 Pin, and the maximum power transmission would be around 450W because of the sensor signals. However, the new connectors would go up to 600W since there will be having 4 new signals to be the communication channels between the motherboard or PSU and the graphic card.

The terminals for the connectors should support up to 10.5A to provide steady power to the graphic card, especially a new powerful graphics card like Nvidia’s GeForce RTX™ 3090 Ti. Besides the terminals, we have to make sure that the resistance of the wires would not be the bottleneck of the electrical current from the source.

We are still waiting for the new Nvidia’s GeForce RTX™ 3090 Ti coming out, and hopefully, the 12+4 Pin connector would be one of the main players in the interconnect in the future.
